
Jim Wolf
After four years working in higher educational administration
in the late 1970's, Jim Wolf began his career in survey research in 1981. He has a Bachelor's
degree in sociology from Lake Superior State College and a Master's degree in sociology from
the University of Chicago where he focused his studies on social policy research and survey methodology.
While in graduate school he worked at the National Opinion Research Center where he later became full-time
programmer in their Center for Computing and Information Services. He is the former Associate Director of
the University of Kentucky Survey Research Center where he was responsible for daily operations
of the Kentucky SRC and coordinated its move from "paper-and-pencil" interviewing to the use of
computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) on a set of networked PCs.
After moving to Indianapolis in 1993 he ran a successful social policy research business where he
worked extensively with state government agencies in Indiana, particularly within Indiana's Department
of Family and Social Services Administration and the Alcohol and Tobacco Commission, by coordinating
research, preparing reports and assisting these agencies meet federal reporting requirements.
In the fall of 2003 Mr. Wolf returned to academic survey research as
director of the Survey Research Center at IUPUI (formerly the IU Public
Opinion Laboratory). His over 20 years of work have resulted in the
publication of one book, a book chapter, five journal articles and dozens
of technical reports covering a wide variety of topics including higher
education, human sexuality, survey methodology, research ethics and,
most recently, dependence and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
